| If you're looking for something else to do during your Key West Vacation, why not take the journey from Key West to Dry Tortugas? It's just like a roadtrip except that it's not on land. Located just 70 miles west of Key West, Dry Tortugas is the last of the Florida Keys. It's a veritable remote island paradise that presents numerous activities that your friends and family can enjoy. Dry Tortugas is composed of seven little islands. Loggerhead Key is the largest and houses the Dry Tortugas lighthouse. Bush Key, formerly named Hog Island is the third largest. It is sometimes connected to Garden Key by a sand bar and is the location of a large tern rookery. Visitors are not allowed from April to September to protect the nesting sooty terns and brown noddys. The other islands or keys of Dry Tortugas include Long Key, Hospital Key, Middle Key, East Key and Garden Key. Garden Key, at 400 by 500 meters with an area of 170,000 m2, is the second largest key and is home to historic Fort Jefferson. Fort Jefferson, known as the "Gibraltar of the Gulf," is the largest 19th century coastal fort. Located on Garden Key Island, it was built to protect the important Gulf of Mexico shipping lanes. It was also used as a military prison during the Civil War. To get to Dry Tortugas from Key West, you can take the Dry Tortugas Ferry Tour or rent a high speed catamaran and go on your own adventure. Pack plenty of food and drinks. If you decide to join a guided tour, food is usually part of the package. Head west from the historic Seaport in Key West; spend a few hours exploring Fort Jefferson. Afterward, go snorkeling or scuba diving in the clear blue water. After a day of snorkeling and exploring, you can either lounge in the beach or head back to Key West or explore the nearby keys. |
